Internet Of Things is basically a proposed idea to interlink objects we use in our daily life to internet technology. It collaborates the fields of electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity by embedding them in this system. Imagine the world in which alarm automatically rings and wakes you up and gives a command to coffee maker so as to make you a coffee. Let's take a situation into consideration. Imagine that in the midst of a hectic schedule you forgot to switch off the lights of your bedroom and realized it only after reaching a certain distance from your abode. How interesting it could be if you can switch it off just by accessing the internet on your mobile phone. This technology indeed exists but is not implemented over the globe as it faces many flaws. Eg:security issues. In the coming years, the number of connected devices on the IoT network is expected to be huge. One estimate says that the number will be nearly 40 billion, which is approximately 30 devices for each and every active social network user in the world.
Innovians Technology in collaboration with IIT Varanasi conducted a workshop in about 20 campuses all around India and my campus was one among these. Professor of IIT and CEO of Innovians Technology, Mr.Prateek Gupta had marked his presence and indeed he was the one who guided us throughout the workshop. We were introduced the Basics of Sensors & Actuators, Cloud Computing, the Arduino Open-Microcontroller Platform, Arduino basics, Arduino Board Layout & Architecture, Reading from Sensors, Programming fundamentals ( C language ), Arduino Programming & Interface of Sensors, Interfacing sensors with Arduino, Programming Arduino and reading from Sensors.
We started with a simple "LED On" project which uses Arduino UNO Board, one Red LED and Arduino USB Cable. First Arduino is connected to LED and then Arduino software is run. After which, Arduino is connected to Computer and the program is downloaded in Arduino using Upload option. We could observe that LED light is continuously ON. This basically introduced us to Arduino Programming. Basic commands in Arduino Programming are:
This workshop indeed helped me to understand the terms and technology used in IOT architecture. It was comprehensive enough and beneficial. The workshop had a good mixture of theoretical and practical sessions. IOT is a vast area and requires skills from multiple sectors and this workshop provided an overview of all sectors.
On my trial to comprehend deeper about the context I realized that, IOT has an impact on many areas of our daily life such as transportation, business and so on. It has many economic benefits as well. Eg: optimizing resource consumption, tracking behavior for real-time marketing, sensor-driven decision analytics, etc. But as I mentioned before, the major drawback it has is the security issue. The network segment should be monitored to identify potential anomalous traffic, and action should be taken if there is a problem. Fixing this issue is not completely possible as causing trouble and chasing the trouble is more of a cat and mouse game.
Thus I conclude by quoting the words of Brendan O’Brien(Chief Architect & Co-Founder, Aria Systems)- "If you think that the internet has changed your life, think again. The IoT is about to change it all over again."
